“The flow of the river is ceaseless, and yet its waters are never the same.”
— Kamo no Chōmei, Hōjōki (An Account of My Hut)
Amid the ever-changing flow of life, there is a beauty that endures. The paths we walk, the colors of light, and the moments that fill this traditional Kyoto townhouse—all gently transform with each passing moment, weaving new threads of light into the flow of time.
Located in Yamatokoriyama, Nara Prefecture, Daisan Art Studio is a creative space where people of all ages, from children to adults, can freely explore art and discover their own unique ways of expression. For this year's Akari Exhibition, we are delighted to showcase the works of Akira Takaoka, the founder and director of Daisan Art Studio.Within the walls of a traditional Kyoto townhouse, enriched by generations of history, fresh perspectives and artistic expressions come together.
It is a moment where past and present, people and art, meet and intertwine. We hope that the gentle glow illuminating this historic townhouse will inspire new connections and create lasting memories.
A softly glowing, round washi paper lantern depicting a goldfish in gently blending colors. The flowing shades of green evoke aquatic plants and the movement of water, while the red suggests a goldfish swimming quietly among them. The gentle light filtering through the traditional Japanese paper delicately reveals the presence of the goldfish, creating a dreamlike scene, as though a moment of time beneath the water had been transformed into light itself.
These beautiful and unique lanterns were created by students of the Daisan Art Studio (第三美術教室), each of whom dyed their own washi paper and carefully experimented with colors and patterns. The richly dyed washi paper, in shades of red, blue, yellow, purple, and more, glows softly when illuminated, revealing a magical beauty quite different from its appearance in daylight.Lanterns of various shapes and styles come together, their colors and patterns harmonizing to beautifully illuminate the traditional Kyoto townhouse (Kyo-machiya).We invite you to enjoy these one-of-a-kind creations, each reflecting the imagination and creativity of the students.
Colorful goldfish swim playfully through a soft, gentle glow, creating a magical, dreamlike scene. Their delicate, flowing tails shimmer in the light, as if the fish were dancing gracefully through the air. Layers of light and vibrant colors weave together to create a world of elegance and wonder. In the tranquil atmosphere of a traditional Kyoto townhouse, enjoy the enchanting dance of the goldfish.
